Harbors :This sector has been developed greatly in the last few years because of the great importance of importing and exporting ways which pass through it. Also, Basra is close to the exporting centers in the south- east part of Asia and the Arab Gulf which made this harbor a vital place for transporting goods. The government is trying to build the biggest harbor in the gulf area for transporting goods between the East and Europe, it is expected to have a harbor with a 100 docks with capacity of 400-500 million ton per year. Air Transport Concerning air transportation, Basra has two commercial airports, one of them is now out of work since the Iranian war, the other one currently represents one of the biggest airports in Iraq which is 'Basra International Airport, from which the national and the international flights are regularly taking off since 2003 to Dubai, Amman, Damascus, Lebanon and Cairo. Basra is looking forward to open other new airlines with Tehran and London.Land transport Basra has such a good net of highway land transportation which includes both the railways and the highways, the province is linked with the other Iraqi provinces that the railway passes through. At the same time, there is a net of internal roadways(major and sub). Investment Opportunities: * Establishment of weight stations Roads and bridges directorate provided a concept to build Weight stations in the crossroads of high ways to prevent traffic accidents or the damage of high ways because of heavy vehicle Basra's Roads and Bridges Directorate defined the suitable places after a negotiation with general directorate of traffic to induct stations as flowing:
* Basra International Airport announces an opportunity to construct the first refinery for aviation fuel in the province Basra international airport declares the an idea of constructing a refinery for aviation fuel in Al-Basra province because of its unavailability in the province and the desperate need for this product to the airport where all the consumed amount of this fuel comes from Al-Dura refinery in Baghdad and there is no imported fuel and the consumed quantities hovering between 200 to 500 thousand liters in every month according to the number of flights where the consumed fuel quantities increase proportional to the number of flights. Basra investment commission is poised to receive the requests for this project from different companies at BIC office (Al-Basra, Al-Tuwaisa, Olympic Committee Street).
